TRUE OR FALSE ANSWERS
Chiropractors will treat patients ranging from newly born babies through to the very elderly. It is common for babies to experience trauma to the spine during child birth so intervention as early as possible can be very beneficial for their long term health. For the elderly, especially those who have limited exercise, chiropractic adjustments can restore movement which has become restricted with ageing.
Because of the additional internal weight gain during pregnancy it is common for the pelvis to become misaligned. This can reduce the space available for the baby to grow and make child birth more difficult than it needs to be. Weight gain to the abdomen can increase the lumbar spine curve leading to changes in posture and resultant back pain. The expectant mum can, therefore, achieve a variety of benefits from a chiropractor who has the knowledge and experience for adjusting pregnant women without causing adverse effects for the unborn baby.
Only Chiropractors have the knowledge, training and experienced needed to detect subluxations and to correct them properly. Manual manipulations by inexperienced people can result in causing unnecessary damage and accelerating degeneration of the subluxated vertebrae.
The bulk of the large number of nerves in the body do not receive pain and, therefore, do not send a signal to the brain. By the time you feel pain the issue may have been present for an extended period of time. Just like heart disease, subluxations may take place over time and progressively deteriorate before it becomes obvious.
Chiropractic adjustments to misalignments lead to improved global functionality of the body’s natural flow allowing the nervous system to heal naturally and to improve overall health in the long term.
It is the underlying condition, not the adjustments, which cause the pain. Chiropractic care treats the condition, ultimately leading to the reduction or elimination of the pain.
Conditions which have existed for many years will usually take several adjustments for proper treatment. Where chronic damage has been caused, it may not be possible to restore the area completely and ongoing treatment may be necessary to maintain improvement. Once the condition has been stabilised, the frequency of adjustments will be reduced. However, ongoing periodic treatments are advisable just as you would regularly visit a dentist to prevent problems arising before they become chronic.
Chiropractors treat the underlying condition, not the resultant symptoms of the condition. Once the condition has been repaired, the pain will disappear naturally.
A vertebral subluxation will disturb the body’s nervous system and this can result in all sorts of issues such as headaches, back aches, shoulder pains, cramps, allergies, asthma, poor vision, poor blood circulation and vertigo.
Whilst the bulk of chiropractic techniques are manual, several involve the use of special tools and tables.
MULTIPLE CHOICE ANSWERS
1. All of the above
Your chiropractor will record your personal medical history (especially as it relates to any symptoms displayed), conduct a physical examination, take an x-ray if necessary, undertake a diagnosis, determine a suitable treatment plan and initiate any relevant initial adjustments required.
These consist of seven in the neck (cervical) area, twelve in the mid back (thoracic) area and five in the low back (lumbar) area.
3. Wellness care
Except in the movies, there are no spinal transplants available today, so you need to take care of the one that you have. Chiropractic care can, in some ways, be similar to orthodontics. Adjustments (braces) are professionally adjusted over a period of time until the correct position is established and maintained. This results in the overall wellness of the patient.
4. Both a) and b)
This is a bit of a trick question. The pain will be reduced or eliminated following the adjustment/s but this is only because the spinal function and/or the nervous system integrity have been restored.
5. A subluxation
A subluxation can occur in any part of the spine. The chiropractor’s role is to correct subluxations through professional chiropractic adjustments.
6. Corrective surgery
Chiropractic care is a non-invasive practice which negates the need for surgery. It also avoids the use of pharmaceuticals.
7. Vertebrae which are misaligned
These will interrupt the nervous system and reduce the body’s ability to function properly. They can cause an imbalance of the muscles and pain in various parts of the body, as well as resulting in bone degeneration if not treated early.
8. A severe pain
It is normal to feel some discomfort after treatment, especially if there was pain before the treatment. However, there should not be severe pain after a manipulation. If you have a concern, please contact your chiropractor as soon as possible.
9. All of the above
Our chiropractors are sensitive to the need for special handling for these categories of patients. Standard practice is, therefore, modified to cater for their needs. The same applies for elderly patients who may have brittle bones and reduced flexibility.
Please feel free to contact our practitioners at the Applecross Chiropractic Centre if you have any questions in relation to these or any other queries. We are only too happy to provide you with explanations and advice.
