The human neck is a delicate part of the body because it needs to carry the head and cope with head movements. Neck pain can result from a range of causes such as bad posture (bending over a computer keyboard, sleeping in an awkward position), vehicle accident trauma (resulting in whiplash), sports injuries and any other sudden neck movements. It can also be related to a trapped nerve caused by a bulge in one of the discs between the vertebrae or from arthritis of the neck.
It is not unusual to find that the cause of a back, shoulder or arm pain originates from a subluxation in the neck which affects the nerves. Typically, a neck pain is felt as a sore neck with stiff neck muscles. However, the pain may also radiate down to the shoulder or between the shoulder blades. It can radiate down the arm or up into the head to create a headache. In the condition known as torticollis, acute pain can give rise to an abnormal neck posture where the head is forced to turn to one side.
Chiropractic manipulation requires a high degree of training and skill to learn the art of adjustment to know where and how to manipulate the neck to relieve the pain from the neck and surrounding area.
